That’s the question many residents and tourists are asking ahead of what’s expected to be a quiet weekend in the town.
One worried shopper who day trips to Southport regularly told OTS news: “It is sad to see Lord Street like it now is and the speed at which shop closures are occurring.
When Argos moved to Kew I was concerned that others may move out of town too, assuming it is cheaper rent there.
Why is rent so expensive in town now?
A lot of us don’t have our own transport and would rather go to town than out of it – in a car park surrounded by stores.
I know the rise in online shopping has been given as another reason for the demise of the high street but Marks and Spencers and Roman are often busy. As are Sports Direct and Flannels, to name but a couple of examples.
Maybe it would help if stores asked their customers what they would like, then they may get more of them.”
