Southport’s LibDem candidate John Wright has welcomed Luciana Berger to the party, saying it shows there is “a better alternative in Britain to Labour and the Conservatives.”
Ms Berger — the MP for Liverpool Wavertree — left the Labour Party earlier this year because of “institutional” hostility towards Jewish people. In February, the Liverpool Echo reported that she was on the receiving end from several party figures in Merseyside. She has now joined the Liberal Democrats because they “believe in equality, opportunity for everyone, social justice and the unequivocal, unqualified condemnation of discrimination.”
Southport LibDems have echoed her feelings.
“Any party would be lucky to have someone as passionate and principled as Luciana Berger”, said John Wright. “But we shouldn’t forget the worrying reasons that led her to join the Liberal Democrats.
“Labour has failed to deal with the scourge of antisemitism in their party. We must all stand up to racism wherever it rears its ugly head.”
Mr Wright went on to say that he hopes Ms Berger will visit Southport soon. “This is a real boost to the Liberal Democrats in Merseyside. We expect more people from Labour to follow – joining many others in Southport who have already made the switch.”
