Liverpool teenager up for national healthcare award

14th October 2019

A young hospital apprentice from Fazakerley could be named as the country’s best clinical support worker, after already clinching the regional title.

Olivia Gillon, 18, who works as a Healthcare Assistant at Aintree University Hospital, was nominated alongside more than 870 healthcare workers for the 2019 Our Health Heroes Awards.

Olivia, who is studying for a Clinical Support Worker Apprenticeship with Hugh Baird College, has been at Aintree for little over 12 months and is amazed that in such a short period of time the care she delivers is getting national recognition.

She said: “I am so proud to have been judged as the best clinical support worker in the North West. It is a privilege to do the job I do and to positively impact the lives of others on a daily basis. To win a national award off the back of that would be unbelievable.”

Once she completes her apprenticeship, Olivia has set her sights on becoming a fully qualified Nurse and having a long career in the NHS.

Olivia added: “I have found my calling in nursing, thanks to the incredible support from my ward colleagues, as well as from my family members who work in the NHS.”

Steve Warburton, Chief Executive of Aintree University Hospital, said: “I’m delighted that Olivia has been shortlisted. Our apprenticeship scheme is helping our staff flourish and the skills and experience they gain helps them build a solid base for a successful career at Aintree. I have every confidence that Olivia will continue to shine and help us deliver the best possible care to our patients. Everyone at Aintree is right behind Olivia and I’d like to wish her the best of luck for the awards ceremony.”

The Our Health Heroes Awards ceremony takes place in London on Wednesday 20 November.
