News that GP waiting times are now at record lengths has been strongly condemned by Southport’s Labour Parliamentary Candidate, Liz Savage.
An annual survey carried out by leading GP magazine, Pulse, reveals that average waiting times have broken the two-week barrier for the first time.
Liz Savage, who has started a campaign to have a walk-in centre established in Southport, says that it is yet another strong indication that the NHS has been going backwards since the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives brought in their Health and Social Care Act in 2012.
“The NHS has been steadily undermined since that legislation. Both parties went on a mission to privatise and underfund the health service. What we see now is the increasing effect and damage.”
“From falling GP numbers in practices across the country to a massive shortage of nurses and doctors in our hospitals, the situation is dire. Having created the NHS, only Labour will restore it and ensure our fantastic NHS staff get the support they need and our residents get the timely care they deserve.”
Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, responding to the survey, said:
“Whether it’s for surgery, in bursting A&Es, for cancer treatment or now in general practice, patients are facing unacceptably long waits. The truth is, as Boris Johnson’s senior adviser confirmed, the Tories simply don’t care about the NHS and can’t be trusted with it.”
