Last Sunday, the Jewish Labour Movement passed a motion of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership as the party came under repeated criticism over its apathetic management of antisemitism allegations.
A motion articulating no confidence in Mr Corbyn and describing him as being unfit to lead the country was also universally passed.
Jewish Labour Supporters label the party as “Institutionally antisemitic”.
The AGM of the Jewish Labour Movement, which holds 2,000 members and has been affiliated for almost a century, voted to pronounce the party as “Institutionally antisemitic”.
Losing the confidence of 2,000 previously loyal Labour supporters may seem immaterial to some. However, there are 263,346 Jews in England and Wales according to the last census, although due to the voluntary nature of the question on faith and under-reporting, the Institute for Jewish Policy Research estimates that the actual figure is 284,000.
Potentially losing so much Jewish support is, therefore, a more significant problem than some of the more opinionated and dismissive Labour activists would have us believe.
Blue-eyed Tory Boy
Alternatively, the Jewish Press cannot seemingly speak highly enough about Southport’s Tory MP.
After first being elected to represent the Merseyside seaside town last year, Damien Moore has already won over a large segment of Southport’s Jews with his pledge to understand their concerns, as well as his steadfast defence of the state of Israel in a series of interventions during heated Westminster debates.
Police arrests made
The Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Community Security Trust and Jewish Leadership Council issued a joint statement, saying: “It is highly significant that the Metropolitan Police have now made three arrests in connection with Labour’s antisemitism problem. This follows the passing of an internal Labour dossier to Commissioner Cressida Dick by LBC Radio, regarding a single batch of 45 cases of alleged antisemitism within the Party. We await the outcome of the investigations, but ask why Labour had not itself alerted the Police. We are also concerned as to how many more cases remain unknown and repeat our request, made one year ago to Mr Corbyn, that the Party urgently appoint an independent ombudsman on such matters.”
