Detailed analysis of last Thursday’s local election results for Southport has revealed that Labour suffered a swing against them to the Lib Dems in each of the seven wards in the resort.
This was even the case in Kew and Norwood wards which were won by Labour for the first time in 2018 and also in 2019. Normally when a political party first makes a ‘breakthrough’ in one area they improve on it the next time. However in Southport this was not the case with Labour slipping back badly in relative terms, particularly in Norwood ward where they suffered a 5% swing against them
The swings in each ward were:
- Meols: 10% against Labour to the Lib Dems
- Dukes: 9%
- Cambridge; 9%
- Birkdale: 7%
- Norwood: 5%
- Ainsdale: 1%
- Kew: 1%
For the town as whole there was an 8% swing from Labour to the Lib Dems, putting paid to the Labour claim (featured on a now-embarrassing banner) that ‘Only Labour can beat the Tories in Southport). Quite simply they never have.
