Labour is real threat to Tories in Southport, warns Conservative secret memo

10th December 2019

Veteran Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: Tory bosses in London have been warned the collapse of the Liberal Democrats in Southport has put their candidate Damien Moore at great risk from a Labour win in the resort.

The warning is contained in a private memo written by Tory pollster Michael Brooks to Conservative national campaign director Isaac Levido.

Today’s Daily Telegraph claims Mr Brooks says in the confidential memo that the collapse of the Lib Dem vote in the Midlands and the North, in seats such as Southport, Derby North, Northampton South, Copeland and Calder Valley “has overwhelmingly benefitted Labour, making Tory seats vulnerable to Labour.”

The revelation comes just two days after top polling boss Peter Kellner urged Lib Dem supporters in Southport to vote Labour if they wanted to stop a Tory victory.

Southport Labour candidate Liz Savage (pictured) is making her third attempt to grab the seat – and if she wins she will not only be the first woman MP for our town, but also Southport’s first Labour MP since the constituency was created in 1885.

Tory Damien Moore is defending a 2,900 majority.

These were the 2017 results in Southport:

CONSERVATIVE 18,541 (38.66%)

LABOUR 15,627 (32.59%)

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT 12,661 (26.40%)

UKIP 1,127 (2.35%)

Whatever your view, don’t waste your vote this Thursday (December 12).
