Labour Politicises Armestice Day
The guns may have drawn to a halt 100 years ago to the day but the Labour Party in Southport has insisted on keeping up party skirmishes even into the town’s most sacred ceremony.
For decades, the Civic procession from the Town Hall to the Cenotaph has been ordered in exactly the same way with the most senior public figures leading the way and councillors from all parties marching side by side in order of seniority, reflecting the solemnity of the situation.
Sadly, the 100th aniversary of the WW1 ceasefire has been marred by the political hijacking of Southport’s Armestice Day ceremony, with councillors being told without notice that this year Labour politicians would have to lead the way. Of course, no other councillors made any fuss as to do so would have been to bring division to what should be a unifiying event.
