Labour issues “thank you” to Southport for history making result in the town.
Now that it’s rosettes are unpinned and its campaign HQ has locked its doors, Labour have been taking stock of their election result in Southport.
They came second for only the first time since a youthful John Prescott contested the seat, in the days before he had his Jags and didn’t have such a strong objection to eggs, all the way back in 1966.
This time, their candidate, Liz Savage, went one better and also produced their best ever result in Southport, gaining over 15,600 votes; nearly 33% of the total votes cast.
“We would like to thank every single constituent who voted for us, it’s a fantastic achievement. We made history; you made history. We have all sent a clear message that Southport is changing. Southport wants change.”
Describing it as “a truly momentous result” Labour pointed out that they have nearly quadrupled their vote in just over two years in the town. At just 6% behind the new Conservative MP for Southport, Damien Moore, they also claimed that if the Liberal Democrats had not split their vote, Southport would now have its first ever Labour MP instead.
“For too long the Liberal Democrats party in Southport has ridden on the backs of Labour supporters; no longer. For decades Labour supporters in Southport did the decent thing, reluctantly accepting the harsh choice of voting Lib-Dem to stop the Conservatives but times have changed” said the 43-year-old-mother-of-two, “We are now second, and by a clear margin, Liberal Democrats should not now shirk the responsibility that Labour supporters carried for so many years if they truly want to stop the Tories.”
Pointing to the fact that there is now a Conservative MP in a town that has its “local hospital, schools and its elderly all facing threat from Tory plans” and is a member of a party that is again looking at coalition, this time with the highly controversial DUP , Labour have issued a strong warning to their opponents:
“We believe it will soon be clear that Moore means less for Southport. It will soon be clear that Southport needs real change, not continued loose change Tory funding. When that happens, we will be there, ready to give Southport the change it is crying out for.”
