KGV students win Sefton Art Competition

BEAUTIFUL paintings and photography by King George V advanced level Art students have won a prestigious art prize.

Stunning works by three KGV students have won prizes in the acclaimed Sefton Student Art Competition at the Atkinson.

Olivia Nolan won first place in the year 12 and 13 photography section and Hannah Preston was awarded second place in the fine art category.

Also among the accolades was Red Roses Darbyshire, who received a commendation in the year 12 and 13 photography section.

Jane Brown, Gallery Manager at the Atkinson, said, ‘The judges were incredibly impressed with the standard of submissions for this year’s student art competition. The prize winners and commendations showed real skill in not only their technical practise but also their creative vision and composition.’

The talented trio, selected from a record number of competitors, were invited to attend a prestigious awards ceremony at the preview of the Sefton Open, a large vibrant art exhibition at the Atkinson featuring talent from across the region.

Red Roses, 17, who is studying Art, Textiles and Photography A Levels and submitted three self-portraits, said,’I am really pleased; I have never entered something like this before so I am delighted with the recognition of my work.’

A former Greenbank High School pupil, Red Roses hopes to do an art foundation course next year at Mid Cheshire College.

Hannah Preston, a student of Classics, Fine Art and Biology A Levels, said: ‘It was a really nice surprise to receive the award; I am really pleased. Creating is something that I’m passionate about and I would like the opportunity to work in a creative industry in the future.’

King George V College offers a long-held tradition of academic excellence in many subjects including A level Art, with the latest outstanding results achieving 100% high grades (A*-B) in Photography and Textiles and 96% in Fine Art A level.
