A top judge in Liverpool has warned jury members in Southport to make sure they attend trials after he fined a woman from nearby Bootle £1,000 for failing to turn up.
Kimberley Kelly, 30, of Randall Drive, in Bootle, was given the maximum fine of £1,000 for contempt and now faces 14 days in prison in default if she does not pay.
The punishment was made by Judge Andrew Menary, QC, who is The Recorder of Liverpool, in Kelly’s absence, as she also failed to turn up for the contempt pro- ceedings.
The Recorder of Liverpool spoke out last month about the serious issue of jury duty while fining a pensioner who had refused to attend the city’s crown court to serve as a juror
