John Pugh: Liverpool fans wrong to boo national anthem

Leader of the Southport Liberal Democrat Group and former MP John Pugh has said Liverpool fans were “wrong” to boo the national anthem at last weekend’s FA Cup final.

Liverpool supporters vocally booed the singing of the national anthem at Wembley on Saturday, before they triumphed over Chelsea to win the FA Cup for the eighth time.

But John Pugh said on Twitter: “For what it’s worth, as a Liverpool supporter, those Liverpool fans who booed the national anthem and Prince William got it wrong and it seems cowardly not to say so.”

Cllr Pugh, a Liverpool supporter himself, was not immediately available for comment when contacted by OTS News.

The actions of Liverpool supporters at the weekend have caused a widespread national debate on free speech.

Boris Johnson, who once accused the city of Liverpool of “wallowing in victim status” in The Spectator, said via a spokesperson: “It was a great shame that as we were marking 150 years of the FA Cup, an event that brings people together, that a small minority chose to act in that way.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said it was not a moment that he enjoyed but also added: “It’s always best to ask the question – why does this happen? They wouldn’t do it without a reason.

“Maybe I’m not here long enough to understand. I am sure it’s historical.”
