Report by Southport FC
We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Southport striker Jim Fryatt at the age of 79.
Jim, who made 141 appearances for the Port during two periods, passed away this afternoon at his home in Las Vagas.
Scoring 39 goals in total, he is best remembered at Southport for his part in our 1972/73 Fourth Divivison title-winning side and the partnership he formed with Andy Provan.
Jim’s 13 goals that season included a ten-minute hat-trick in the 7-0 win in the fog at Darlington, having also featured in our first promotion-winning team in 1966/67.
He scored almost 200 goals in his career and at one point was credited with the fastest ever goal in a Football League game, scoring for Bradford (Park Avenue) against Tranmere Rovers after just four seconds.
Having finished his career in the USA, he moved to and settled in Las Vegas, working as a slot machine repair mechanic in the casinos before working at a local golf club.
He is pictured in the background of this photo during his time in the States with another former Southport player, Chris Dunleavy.
His son Ed became a professional golfer, playing in many major tournaments.
We send our condolences as a club to Jim’s family and friends.
