Public concerns have been raised about apathetic dog owners allowing their unrestrained pets to stick their heads out of car windows.
Rule 57 of the highway code states: “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”
The dog in the photo with its head sticking out of a vehicle was pictured by a concerned local pedestrian at traffic lights in Birkdale.
Such idiotic recklessness puts the dog, the driver and other road users at risk.
