Many thanks to Mike Bromley, who took these great pictures of a young Grey Seal (at least I think it is a Grey, although it looks slender, the nostrils don’t appear to be the right shape for Common, but I’m happy to be corrected) which hauled out of the surf at the southern end of #Ainsdale beach recently.
Seals are fairly common off the #Sefton coast, but if you do see one, please give it a wide berth – it may be hauled out for a rest and approaching them will simple force them back into the sea when they are tired.
They are also large marine predators with sharp teeth.
Admire them from a distance please.
If you do see an animal that is obviously distressed or ill or the shore, contact the British Divers Marine Rescue Hotline on
01825 765546.
Mike took these shots at range with a big lens, so the animal was not disturbed by him.
Sometimes we can forget that many wild animals use the same landscape as us and should be respected and left in peace.
Most of the Sefton coast is a Site of Special Scientific Interest that we are lucky to have on our doorstep.
Thanks for sharing the images Mike!
