Detectives investigating violent disorder at a Southport football match earlier this month are issuing the image of a male we wish to speak to.

At around 6pm on Tuesday 2 April, police were called to Russell Road to reports of violent disorder following an Under-16s football match at the location.

Threats were made towards spectators by a group of youths who had reportedly been shouting verbal abuse during the game. Following these threats, a man in his 50s was punched to the face, resulting in a non-life threatening head injury.

Two other males were also assaulted resulting in minor injuries. A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy, both from Southport, were arrested the following day today on suspicion of violent disorder and were both taken to a police station for questioning, and remain under investigation.

Detective Inspector Gary Stratton said: “We think that the male pictured may have information in connection with this ongoing enquiry, so if you recognise him, please let us know.

“This was a disgusting incident which resulted in violence, threats and distress at a boys’ football match. Although two people have been arrested, we are determined to identify all of those involved and deal with them accordingly.

“If you witnessed this incident, have any footage, or have heard since about anyone who was involved, please do the right thing and tell us what you know.”
