Iconic Southport landmark restored to former glories
A key Southport landmark is being restored to former glories following the intervention of a campaigning local councillor.
Cllr David Barton contacted Sefton Council after a local resident highlighted that the fascia frontage of the Atkinson Arts Centre was being damaged by water.
The damp problems were particularly affecting one of the maiden figureheads.
Cllr Barton’s investigations revealed that the problems were due to a blocked outlet which had been allowing water to build up in the gutter and enter the stonework.
He has now been successful in securing contractors to unblock and repair the blocked outlet.
Cllr Barton, who represents Dukes ward, said: “I was informed that it would take many months for the stonework to fully dry out.
“Having also pressed the matter of the green staining present along the sandstone structure which includes the front canopy I was informed that the council is now investigating whether this can be cleaned off with an appropriate biocide wash, although this will incur a cost.
“Now more than ever it is paramount that as a community we seek to address this additional matter as part of a long- term ongoing plan to drive investment back into Southport, especially in a high quality retail sector.
“This particular building which is a key local landmark right at the centre of Lord Street must be preserved for future generations to come to appreciate and also to inspire others within the private sector to maintain their properties and assets across the seaside town, especially the Lord Street Conservation area.”
Cllr Barton has requested an estimate for the cost of the treatment processes and has urged the local community to support the preservation of this key landmark.
He said: “Once again I am also obliged to the Council for acting on this request to maintain and preserve their own civic assets as we seek together to set a shining example for all to do their part in maintaining their parts of our Victoriana jigsaw.”
