Scouring for new venues to host entertainment events is a job that has taken Mike Miller around the world and given him opportunities to meet new people.
He recalls feeling “self conscious” and “old” in his consumer facing role though, until he made a “game changer” decision to have a hair transplant that would boost his confidence and make him feel happier.
The 56-year-old from Birkdale, who works as a head of business development in the leisure industry, said: “My hair had been thinning for four or five years and then suddenly, over 18 months, it just went.
“You don’t know how it feels until it happens to you.”
Hoping for a solution other than simply shaving the rest of his hair off, Mike said: “My hairline was receding quickly and I started to look into having a hair transplant but it’s a minefield.”
Expensive UK treatment costs, coupled with an abundance of overseas clinics which proved difficult to choose from and trust with his appearance, had originally put Mike off hair restoration.
He added: “In Turkey alone there are thousands of clinics so where do you start? Some results looked like dolls’ hair.”
Tony Owen, the managing director of Hair Transplant Solutions Ltd, provided Mike with an answer to replenishing his hair which was backed by his own positive experience of the treatment.
Mike had been having his hair cut by Tony, who has more than 40 years’ experience in the hairdressing industry and has also had a hair transplant himself, when he was offered a service which was not only affordable but would make him feel at ease.
Hair Transplant Solutions Ltd work with a reputable clinic in Istanbul, Turkey to carry out a trusted treatment, complete with a consultation ahead of flying out and aftercare to monitor the results.
A chaperone service is also available as an optional extra, with Tony on hand to offer expert guidance, support and answer questions throughout the process.
Mike flew out to Istanbul in December 2018 for his hair transplant – a process which amounted to around £2,500 once flights had been booked separately.
Having chosen the chaperone service for his trip, he said: “Tony came with me and that was really important to me.
“I was thinking ‘will they do what I want them to do, and do I know what I want?’ But Tony listened and made it so slick and professional and so easy.
“They drew a hairline on my head and I could ask Tony if it looked right.
“He was with me at the hotel and for the procedure, and then there was aftercare and products to wash my hair.”
Mike stayed in a hotel where other guests were also visiting for hair transplants, which he said made the process feel “normal,” and an initial blood test was followed by a six-hour treatment the next day.
Initial scabbing healed after a couple of weeks and then it took around six months before Mike’s hair had grown enough to cut properly, and around eight to nine months before it could be styled.
Describing his pre-transplant hair “like chalk and cheese” compared to how it looks now, he said: “It’s 100% boosted my confidence. I wasn’t happy [before] and I felt old.
“I’m really proud of my hairline now – it looks better than before and I couldn’t be happier.”
Suggesting people now look at him differently, Mike added: “Mates would take the mick at first. One bought a wig to the pub and we all had a laugh at my expense.
“Now people say ‘I can’t believe your hair,’ and men don’t often compliment each other like that.
“It’s a real game changer. I look younger and feel better in every way.”
