How do you see the future of Southport?

At 7pm on 16 December at the Salvation Army on Shakespeare Street there will be a presentation on the possible future for our town.  Titled A vision for the future of our town: silicon sands at the heart of the green energy coast, Lib Dem councillor, Fred Weavers, will argue that our town has a wealth of natural resources that need to be harnessed and unlocked to create a sustainable economy and a place to work and live. He envisions a town that could become a sports and leisure centre creating businesses, jobs and opportunities; a bright future for generations to come.

But it’s a two-way dialogue.  Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Southport, Councillor Sue McGuire who spoke at the recent Area Committee meeting about needing a vision for Southport explained “Consultants employed by the Council have produced “The Southport Development Framework” but at this stage that’s all it is “a framework”.  There are concerns that this will end up on the shelf gathering dust with all the past reports like this.  Southport needs a strategy for the future but residents need to be involved to drive it forward.

Councillor McGuire added “The event on the 16th hosted by John Pugh MP will give residents the opportunity to put forward ideas and to have an open and frank debate on where they see Southport in the next 10, 20 and 50 years. The Southport Development strategy will be part of this discussion but the evening will be more about listening to residents ideas and then putting together a plan to build on the strategy – something which we feel the Council has not really done so far.”

We hope to see you there. Just turn up at the door, no tickets required.
