Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust’s Dementia and Delirium Team will be taking 850,000 steps during August to raise awareness of Dementia.
The team said: “Research has shown that 850,000 people in the UK are living with Dementia in the UK and at least 25% of hospital beds are occupied by a person living with Dementia. To raise awareness, Our Dementia and Delirium Team will be taking 850,000 steps during the month of August.
“Many of our departments will be taking on this challenge to help us raise money towards improving dementia care provision throughout the trust.
“We have set up a JustGiving page and any donations will be greatly appreciated. We will be monitoring our steps weekly and posting updates to social media. The challenge is also aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of participants by encouraging people to become more active. “Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust have a newly formed Dementia and Delirium Team who support those living with Dementia or experiencing a delirium during admission to hospital. During a hospital admission, a person living with dementia can experience a plethora of negative emotions which have a detrimental effect on their patient journey. We hope to improve their journey through specialised dementia care provision and support for those experiencing acute confusion in hospital.
“This support can take many forms which correspond with our trusts vision of becoming a Dementia friendly hospital. The team also offers education and training to all staff members to improve knowledge of Dementia and Delirium. We have ongoing projects aimed at improving all aspects of the patients’ journey during their time with our trust.
“We are signed up to the Dementia-Friendly Hospital Charter, which provides high-level principles of what a dementia-friendly hospital should look like and recommended actions hospitals can take to fulfil them. We also support John’s Campaign which aims to support relatives and carers to be able to stay with those living with dementia whilst they are admitted to hospital.
