Skem United Football Club chiefs say it could face going out of business after they were thrown out of their ‘home’ ground by the stadium’s Southport-based owners, Chequer Properties.
Bailiffs were brought in to change the locks at the stadium last Friday at 6am and a security guard was put in place at the ground to prevent club officials entering the premises.
Club officials have spoken of their shock after Chequer Properties, based on Hoghton Street, took the action over alleged ‘breach of contract’ regarding the club’s lease. The ground’s owners say this involves failing to keep the stadium and buildings in a good state of repair and safety issues.
It is believed that several functions, including a wedding reception, were due to be held at the ground’s social club in the last few days and could not be held at the venue.
The club even had to negotiate with security guards to remove enough kit and equipment to allow their game against Tadcaster last Saturday to go ahead.
United’s lease on the ground was due to run out next month and the team are scheduled to play their home games at Prescot Cables from November. They have agreed to play at Marine FC’s ground in Crosby on Saturday.
Club chairman, Paul Griffiths, said: “This could potentially put us out of business. We have a ground share arrangement but that is not until November.” But he added: “Contrary to some rumours circling this weekend, Skelmersdale United’s focus is on moving onwards and upwards and not ‘folding’ or ‘giving up the fight.’ An outsider will not defeat us.”
