High tide uncovers unexploded wartime bomb on Ainsdale beach

24th April 2023

Ainsdale beach was sealed off by emergency services last night after a World War Two bomb was unearthed by high tides.

Receding water levels washed away part of the beach surface revealing the tip of an unexploded bomb.

The explosive, thought to be from the 1930s, has been lying dormant under the sand for decades.

Costal experts believe there are dozens of similar wartime bombs and incendiary devices still yet to be uncovered.

Emergency services including Southport’s Pffshore Rescue teams, the Coast Guard and a bomb disposal unit were called to the scene last night and safely disposed of the bomb before reopening the beach.
