Heroin Needle shock as mourners grieve lost babies
A shocked grandfather was horrified to discover used syringes near to a bench at Duke Street Cemetery’s baby memorial garden and has raised fears that children could be harmed by picking them up or playing with them.
The retired nurse, who doesn’t want to be named, regularly visits the grave of his granddaughter and said that he has often noticed dog mess and empty beer cans left around the graveyard during the last year.
The baby garden, which was opened in the mid-nineties, appears to be where most of the mess is usually left but the pensioner felt he had to speak out once he had seen the needles as they can be so dangerous.
He flagged up that if children were to get dog muck in their eyes, it can cause blindness; crushed cans can cause cuts and that used syringes are particularly dangerous as they can incubate dangerous bloodborne diseases including HIV and hepatitis.
He saw a community minded member of the public picking up the needles and disposing of them safely on Monday, but wants to warn members of the public to be on their guard as they can be ‘quite hard to spot’ in the grass and they could end up becoming impaled by one.
