Help parkrun celebrate the NHS 70th birthday

The team at Southport parkrun will be celebrating the 70th birthday of the NHS with a mass turnout of NHS staff to take part in the town’s parkrun on Saturday June 9 in Hesketh Park.

Dr Simon Tobin of Norwood Surgery and parkrun Ambassador for Health and Wellbeing said: “We’d like as many NHS staff, past and present to join us to celebrate this landmark birthday.Come along and run, walk or volunteer. It’s free and registration is easy on the Southport parkrun website.”

The success of the NHS is due to the amazing staff who work tirelessly in such challenging conditions. Taking part in parkrun will provide a wonderful opportunity forour community to thank those who keep the NHS going and to celebrate NHS70. It will also help spread awareness of the enormous benefits of physical activity for the whole community. Regular exercise reduces the risk of many major illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, depression, dementia and some cancers.

Councillor Pat Keith, who was the driving force for the launch of the highly successful Southport parkrun in 2016, said: “I’ve worked closely with Dr Tobin in emphasing the mental and physical health benefits of taking part in the event which is non- competitive and inclusive.

The 9th June parkrun will be a double celebration as it’s Southport parkrun’s second birthday too. The weekly event has been an astonishing success. It attracts large numbers of people of all ages and abilities just 24 people turned up for the first Southport parkrun but numbers have grown with recent attendances topping 400.
