Heartfelt tributes paid to ‘legendary’ Graham Suthren

6th November 2024

Tributes have been paid to ‘real gentleman’ Graham Suthren who has sadly passed away in Southport.

The former Southport Rugby Club head coach and local legend passed away peacefully at home and hundreds of people have now spoken out in tribute to Graham.

Gareth Lang said “Graham was a beloved mentor, friend, and guiding presence in my life, Graham played a pivotal role in introducing many of us to rugby, sparking a passion that shaped who I am today.

“His influence extended far beyond the game; he was a pillar of strength during difficult times, standing by us with unwavering kindness. When our Colts team suffered the tragic loss of a teammate in a house fire, Graham was there driving us all the way to Scotland for the funeral.

“His compassion and support left an indelible mark on each of us. Even in recent years, Graham could still be found on the sidelines, cheering us on and sharing his pride in the paths we’d taken. He often remarked, with his characteristic humility, “I haven’t done too bad, have I?” as he saw his former players – myself and Joe Mawdsley among them – step into leadership roles as captains of the first team.

“Graham’s impact on our lives was profound, and his warmth and encouragement will be deeply missed.

They don’t make people like Graham anymore. Rest in peace, dear friend, and thank you for everything you’ve done for me personal and I’m sure many others.”
