Fire crews in Southport were given the odd task of helping rescue a hawk from a TV aerial last night.

The RSPCA drafted in fire fighters from Manchester Road after a homeowner in the town called up to say their signal was being interrupted – by a hawk.

The pet Harris hawk had flown away from its owner but had become trapped in the antenna by its jesses on its feet.

Crews managed to calm the bird down before freeing it from the aerial and safely bringing it down to the ground.

RSPCA staff later returned the Harris hawk to its owner.
