Everyone loves a good movie, whether it’s the latest blockbuster or a timeless classic, and right here in Southport, there are plenty of ways to delve into the big-screen experience. In fact, getting the movie buzz goes way beyond sitting down with a box of popcorn in a theatre. It was only in April that one person’s love of Hollywood’s leading ladies was put on full display at the Wayfarers Shopping Arcade. Here’s what you can look forward to this spring and summer as a film fan in Southport and more ways for you to delve into the movies you love.
It all starts with a trip to the cinema
If you want to enjoy a movie in its best possible form and dodge the torrents of direct-to-streaming productions that studios don’t have enough confidence in to put to the public, it’s best to go to the cinema. Southport is home to two distinctly different cinemas which specialise in different film schedules and offer unique experiences. For most, the place to go for the newest hits is Vue Southport.
Over at Ocean Plaza, if there’s a big-budget film or movie featuring the biggest stars in the world, you know it’ll be put on at Vue. Best of all, Vue has been going big on making the cinematic experience more accessible. This means reducing prices for tickets. So, to see the biggest releases, if you book online, it’ll only cost £4.99 per ticket.
With the likes of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, The Fall Guy, A Quiet Place: Day One, Furiosa, Challengers, Back to Black, Civil War, Kung Fu Panda 4, The Bikeriders, Maxxxine, Boy Kills World, and City of Dreams headlining the spring and summer slate, there’s plenty to jot down on the calendar for a great experience during the week. Then, there’s the Southport Bijou Cinema.
Bijou Cinema is a not-for-profit cinema, putting on one or two films at the same set times on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays each week. You can buy tickets at £1 cheaper with a £10 annual membership and they serve drinks and snacks an hour before screenings. Those screenings range from hit movies of yesteryear to brand-new releases, often given smaller recent releases longer life on the big screen so more can enjoy them.
More ways to get the Hollywood thrills in Southport
The best films transcend the big screen and become major brands across the world of entertainment and merchandising. Star Wars is long hailed as the ultimate for this, but plenty of other films have become legendary enough to dive into other realms of fun. Among online casino slots on bingo sites, you’ll spot several Hollywood hits. There’s Robocop Cash Collect, Jumanji: The Bonus Level Live, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, and many, many more!
In a more traditional sense of enjoying hit movies, of course, we’re also swamped with streaming options. The trick is getting through the massive libraries without burning too much time scrolling to find flicks that are actually worth your time. For this, turn to the website Reelgood and its Movie Roulette. Use the filters to add your streaming platforms and narrow down to ones with good Reelgood scores, then hit spin!
Then again, you don’t need a streaming subscription in the UK to be able to find a whole host of excellent movies. Right now, for free: BBC iPlayer has Sicario, The Martian, and Superbad; Rakuten TV has The Big Short and Whiplash; Channel 4 has X and Hereditary; and ITV has The Princess Bride, No Country for Old Men, Apocalypse Now, Drive, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, The Truman Show, How to Train Your Dragon, Legend, and Pulp Fiction.
Tap into your inner cinephile this spring and summer in Southport to revel in the big screen experience at this exciting time to be a film fan!
