Free Trees for Ainsdale this Saturday

12th March 2020

Following two very popular events in Birkdale in February, residents in the Ainsdale area are being given the opportunity to collect a free tree this Saturday.

Ainsdale’s Lib Dem Councillor Lynne Thompson (pictured right with colleagues at one of the Birkdale events) has arranged the event between 11.00 am and 12.00 noon on Saturday 14th March in Station Road, Ainsdale – opposite the Post Office.

Residents are being offered a free tree to plant in their garden. Local councillors have worked with the Mersey Forest and the local council to obtain a number of whips for residents to plant. Whips are young trees around 2-3 feet high.

Cllr Lynne Thompson said: “I was able to help out with a very successful event two weeks ago in Birkdale Village, and now it is Ainsdale’s turn.”

“We will have a number of different varieties available including Elder, Dog Rose, Hawthorn, Privet and Hornbeam, so there ought to be something to suit every garden.”

“One of the main reasons we have arganised these sessions is that it is a really cost effective way of getting more trees into local roads.”

“We would all love to get more street trees in place but they are very costly to the council and can suffer problems of vandalism and so on.”

“In fact, for the cost of one street tree we are able to distibute over 500 whips in Ainsdale and Birkdale for residents to plant themselves in their gardens.”

“In 5 or 10 years we hope to see the benefit of a greener environment in Southport.”
