Southport hotelier, Vic Foulds, who used to work in the NHS as Nursing Assistant, has launched a petition to get Southport’s MP to change his stance on the meagre 1% pay award for nurses.
“I feel I am speaking for the whole of Southport who have depended more this year on the local NHS than in any previous one.
“They are appalled that nurses and care workers are not only dealing with human impact of Covid but are expected to take the economic hit too. Meanwhile contractors cosying up to the government are making obscene profits.
“The only people that can stop this are MPs -particularly government MPs.
“No local MP has to slavishly follow the party line. Certainly our previous one didn’t. They need to respond to the wishes of their constituents.”
Mr Foulds has been supported by retiring councillor and former Sefton Mayor, Richard Hands.
Mr Hands who has recently endured a long period of hospitalisation himself said:
“I have seen at close quarters the pressure our nurses are under.
“Nurses have families and homes to run, as well as patients, and deserve better than the government is currently offering.
“If one after one, local MPs tell the Prime Minister that 1% is a slap in the face, we might see a positive improvement in the offer.
“We the people of Southport are the only people who can force our local representative to change and the only people he is answerable to.
“We can do our bit by signing the petition and trying to force the change we want”.
