Former Everton chairman Dr David Marsh MBE has passed away aged 88, Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club has announced.
Born in Southport in 1934, Dr Marsh was most well known for his chairmanship of the Blues, but leaves behind a considerable legacy in his contribution to golf, both locally and nationally.
Professionally, he spent his career as a GP, practising in Kirkby.
A former amateur golfer, Birkdale resident Dr David Marsh served as chairman of Everton between 1991 and 1994 when he succeeded Sir Philip Carter.
He oversaw the return of Howard Kendall for a second spell as manager in his first year.
Away from football, he was the youngest captain of Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club in 1967. Dr Marsh had been president of the Lancashire and English Golf Unions between 1973 and 1975 and he was made captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1990, the most prestigious office in world golf.
He was awarded an MBE in 2010 for his services to amateur golf.
He twice won the English Amateur, represented England on 75 occasions and helped the Great Britain and Ireland team win the Walker Cup in 1971.
He also played for Southport RFC, joining the club in 1957.
