A man who taught karate and physical defence to hundreds of youngsters across Southport has been jailed for raping a schoolgirl.
David Bottomley, from Banks, a former doorman in Southport and karate instructor, was described in crown court this week as a ‘monster’ by one of his victims and a judge said that he had given a dishonest and devious account in his trial.
58-year-old Bottomley was convicted of the attacks after a trial. He was acquitted of two other sex assaults on the schoolgirl and of three sex offences on two others.
Prosecutors told the court how first abused a woman, when he committed a historic sex offence against her, which would today be classed as rape.
In another incident he was said to have used a karate kick on the woman’s jaw while wearing steel toe capped boots.
Allegations emerged after his second victim, who was a schoolgirl at the time of the abuse, watched an episode of Crimewatch.
Judge Aubrey said Bottomley was a “violent and abusive” man, whose sex attack on the woman left her feeling sick, violated and humiliated. He said on another occasion he kicked her in the jaw.
Judge Aubrey said: “You had steel toe cap boots on. She described it as being excruciatingly painful and thought you had broken her jaw.”
He said Bottomley raped and abused the schoolgirl and manipulated her by giving her money afterwards.
Judge Aubrey told Bottomley: “You have shown no remorse whatsoever” and jailed him for a total of 14 years with an extended one year on licence as an offender of particular concern.
He was also ordered to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
