Formby paedophile sentenced to 21 years in prison

Police have today welcomed the sentencing of a Formby man for sex offences.

Paul Shields, 45, of Beechwood Drive, Formby, was jailed today at Liverpool Crown Court for 21 years after being found guilty of 22 sexual offences including rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Shields was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

The offences, involving two females, took place between 2006 and 2011.

Detective Inspector Michelle Wilson said: “This is a significant custodial sentence that reflects the gravity of the offences committed by Paul Shields. I am pleased that he will now spend a considerable period of time behind bars for his actions.

“I would like to take this opportunity to praise both of his victims for their courage and dignity throughout the whole of this investigation. As Shields pleaded not guilty they were forced to endure giving evidence in court.

“I hope that the severity of the sentence handed out today gives them an opportunity to finally move on with their lives knowing that Shields is behind bars where he cannot cause hurt to anyone else.

“Merseyside Police is committed to protecting victims of sexual offences.

“We know how difficult it can be for people to come forward and report incidents but I want to reassure anyone who reports an incident to us will be safeguarded and supported throughout the investigation.

“We have a team of dedicated staff who will expertly and compassionately deal with your reports and we will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.”
