Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson paid his respects to the 96 Liverpool fans who died in the Hillsborough disaster 30 years ago.
The Merseyside MP joined the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, and the Lord Mayor, Cllr Christine Banks, in laying wreaths on behalf of the people of the city at 10.30am at St George’s Hall on Monday 15 April.
Eighteen Liverpool fans from Sefton died at Hillsborough.
The MP tweeted: “Paid my respects at St George’s Hall to the 96 men, women and children who went to watch a football match 30 years ago and never went home. #JFT96 #Hillsborough“
Monday 15th April marks the 30th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. The city came to a standstill at 3.06pm, the time the ill-fated match was halted due to the tragedy unfolding on the terraces.
Formby resident, Barry Devonside, whose son Chris died in the tragedy, is one of those who has fought relentlessly on behalf of the families for justice for those who died, including in pressing the Government to appoint an independent public advocate to support families in any future disasters.
At St George’s Hall banners were hung showing the faces of those who died.
A total of 96 candles were lit and the words “Never Forgotten” were due to be displayed until Thursday.
A public service was held at the Anglican Cathedral at 2.45pm.
