Formby MP Bill Esterson has lent his support a local animal charity which has launched an urgent fundraising mission due to a national backlog in processing legacies from wills.
Freshfields Animal Rescue, a Formby charity which rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes more than 2,000 animals and birds every year, has launched an appeal in the hopes of raising £50,000.
The charity says a funding crisis is “threatening our mission to rescue and rehome abused, neglected and unwanted animals”.
On the online fundraising page, the charity says: “Due to the never-ending stream of distressed animals who need us, we are always full to capacity with many more animals waiting to be admitted.
“At this moment however, Freshfields is experiencing a serious cash flow crisis through no fault of our own. Like many charities, we rely on Legacies and Gifts in Wills for around 30% of our funding.
“There is currently a national backlog in dealing with legacies. Solicitors are up to four months behind, with over 250,000 probate cases waiting to be processed. There are ever-increasing demands on our resources, as more and more animals are brought to our doors or, like Millie, literally abandoned on our doorstep every day
“We urgently need your help right now to see us over this worrying hurdle.
“We need to buy food and medicines for over 600 animals like Millie, who get the care and love they so desperately need. We need to pay our bills, and avoid the need to close our doors to new admissions.”
MP Bill Esterson has two cats, Jackson and Frida, who his family re-homed from Freshfields. Mr Esterson said he hoped animal lovers from across the borough would help the charity and join the new ‘Friends of Freshfields’ group which will meet for the first time at the Cross House in Formby on Thursday September 5 at 7pm to discuss ways to help the charity.
