Family of Southport man stuck in Dubai coma in plea for help

A Southport ex-pat is currently stuck in a comatose state in a Dubai intensive care hospital ward.

His family have now launched a desperate plea for help after his insurance company said they would not pay towards his medical bills.

Personal trainer Andy Irwin tried to take his own life after a serious mental breakdown at his home in Dubai.

He was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital where he remains in a coma.

His parents said: “Our son Andrew (Andy) Irwin has recently had a serious mental breakdown thus causing life threatening harm to himself resulting in him being in intensive care in a hospital in Dubai.

“He was working as an ex-pat personal trainer and due to his mental breakdown his insurance have refused to pay his medical bill, leaving his wife and his 13 year old son with the massive worry of an extortionate hospital bill which already stands at £46,000 for 5 days and will continue to increase.

“They live in rented accomodation so have nothing to sell to help raise the money.

“If we had a house to sell we would do so in a heartbeat but we also live in rented accommodation. Andy is an ex serviceman and served in the RAF and under normal circumstances was a well liked hard working man.

“Nobody was aware that he was suffering with his mental health. It’s so very hard to ask for help but we really are desperate.

“The hospital want the money and as mentioned he is still in intensive care so the bill will keep rising and myself, my wife and all Andys family just want him to survive this awful thing.

“We are reaching out to anyone that knows Andy and anyone else willing to help with this terrible situation. We appreciate any help from the bottom of our hearts.”
