Southport Pier will need three million pounds of repairs carrying out urgently.
Sefton Council published a report today effectively condemning the current state of the pier’s decking, which has already caused numerous injuries and accidents.
Council chiefs say they have got no choice but to try and borrow £3 million to replace the full length of the iconic Southport pier’s walkway.
The existing floorboards, which have only been in place since a previous refurbishment in the year 2000, have rotted away after 22 years of exposure.
While the council say the pier is still safe enough to remain open, they have pulled the small pier train from service to minimise the damage to the decking.
Work is expected to start in October after the summer season has ended.
