Former Southport councillor David Barton says Sefton Council are missing a trick by shutting Southport Market two days a week.
He also claims he played a major role in securing the funding for the building.
The Market which has recently been transformed into a food hall is shut on Mondays and Tuesdays.
However the former town centre councillor, who was forced to give up his seat in a high profile fraud court case involving his family, says the council should keep the market open seven days a week.
Mr. Barton says: “Having played a key role in securing a major funding support package from both Local and Central Government, I am delighted to see my collective endeavours alongside the local community finally paying off.”
After a thorough date-led exercise involving voluminous canvassing of people for their individual feedback and formally presenting this to the Authorities, I am determined that this central heritage site is put to absolute best use for the people and Sefton Council together.”
“An additional day should be considered as soon as possible given the ongoing rising popularity of this venue for people based near and far. Whilst ongoing reports detail the Local Authority’s need to increase its finances, this really is a no brainer proposition.”
“At a time when Sefton Council can and should be making optimal use of all of their commercial assets, it is crucial that after all the blood, sweat and tears that went into reaching this stage, that every single step is taken to capitalise on this cornerstone success.
“Should this lead to greater letting of other Council assets, this will have been worth all the endeavour and funding invested to date by myself and others.”
