Emergency services remain on scene at the coastal road between Birkdale and Ainsdale this morning following a huge crash.
Police were called just after 2am to a scene of devastation after a BMW car collided with a series of bollards on the dark stretch of road near to the former Sands pub.
Emergency services found the vehicle abandoned and OTS understands there were signs at least one occupant had tried to escape the vehicle via a window.
Police helicopters and specialist dog units were called to trace the car’s occupants after fears they were suffering from serious injuries.
A search of the surrounding dunes and beach took place into the early hours.
The road remains completely closed this morning as an investigation continues.
A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision on the Coastal Road, in Southport, earlier this morning (Thursday 9 February).
“At around 2.30am, it was reported that a black BMW had collided with a number of bollards.”
“When emergency services arrived at the scene, the driver had fled the area.”
