Drinking water in Southport can vary from “hard” water to moderately hard

15th January 2018

The tap water we use every day in Southport is provided to us by United Utilities. They are a water board that operate in the North West of England, covering over 3 million homes and 200,000 businesses across the region.

The area is divided up into 226 water supply zones, and the water supplied to a zone is usually from one water treatment works or service reservoir. Ours specifically in Southport is from the River Dee and local groundwater sources.

Our tap water in this area can vary from “hard” water to moderately hard. This means the water is high in magnesium and calcium carbonate, the two main elements to limescale. Limescale is a hard, off white, chalky deposit which is most commonly found in kettles, around sinks and taps and poorly maintained heating systems. Limescale can be deadly to appliances! By reducing the flow rate, thermal conduction and thermal efficiency, scale is something you should be looking to remove from your water.

Hard Water Map of UkLimescale is just one of many naturally occurring chemical components found in tap water all around the country. Another main chemical found in tap water, which is added to the water by the water treatment companies, is chlorine.

You may know chlorine as the stuff they put in the swimming baths to make sure the water stays clean. It’s got that sour, distinctive smell, which is actually the chloramines working to kill all the harmful bacteria and germs in the water. However, water companies deliberately add this to the water, as the cheapest and most effective way to disinfect the water, on the size and scale they do it. Although it is removed to some degree, tap water still contains a varying amount of chlorine. To the untrained nose and mouth you wouldn’t notice it. However, it is making a massive difference to how your tea, coffee and even your food tastes! Especially foods such as pasta, which requires water to absorb to allow it to cook. You don’t want to be eating chlorinated pasta, do you?

Luckily for us United Utilities offer an online service where you can search via your postcode area to see details of the contents of our tap water. See it here: https://www.unitedutilities.com/services/your-water-supply/drinking-water-quality/
