Do you take your pet to the vets?

Woodlands Animal Sanctuary are trying to get across the importance of having proper health checks on your pets from an early age!

Recently, due to a change in home circumstances, a 10 month old cat came into the care of Woodlands. As with every sanctuary newbie he went through a full veterinary check which highlighted a heart murmur.

A heart murmur is not uncommon in cats however with further investigation into the cause of the murmur it was found that he has Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
HCM is a condition in which the heart muscle becomes thick. Often, only 1 part of the heart is thicker than the others. The thickening can make it harder for blood to leave the heart, forcing the heart to work harder to pump blood therefore increasing the size of the muscle and so on.

Vickie from Woodlands says “Unfortunately with this diagnosis his life expectancy is significantly reduced. We have started him on a medication programme to slow down the enlarging of the heart although it may only give him a few extra months. Had he been diagnosed earlier it would not have stopped the disease, but earlier treatment could have given him an extended life span.”

Jiggly will have to have a monthly heart scan and heart medication which will have an ongoing month cost of £73.78

Woodlands Animal Sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates a wide range of wild and domestic animals. It costs us approximately £3000 a week to run the Sanctuary and as we receive no Government funding this would not be possible without the generosity of the great British public.
