What is a horse bridle? In one respect, it is a two-way tool for communication between the horse and rider. Now, horses don’t really ‘talk’ (but like any other sentient beings, they do communicate in their own way). The relationship between horse and rider is always about figuring out how to communicate with each other – and horses are very aware of smell and much more receptive to feel, so as far as the horse is concerned, the rider can speak volumes with the body. But it does help when the rider’s equipment is functioning properly!
Finding a bridle for horses that is best for your individual horse is the first step toward success in the saddle. But how are you supposed to know which horse bridles to use when there are so many different types to choose from?
Popular Types of Bridles
- Snaffle Bridle
The snaffle bridle is one of the simplest and most common. It is a plain design with only one bit. It is actually quite like the Cavesson noseband bridle.
It is good for a novice & can be used for many activities, i.e., dressage showjumping and hacking. Because they are not as complicated as the double, they are easier to put on and fit.
- Double Bridle
The double bridle is different from the normal bridle because it has 2 bits- or less disposable than normal things, like a snaffle or curb. Along with two reins so as to adjust them to the horse.
It’s great for people who ride at higher levels but can be difficult to ride with. You have to know how to use both a snaffle and a curb, and you have to get used to handling 2 reins.
- Hackamore
The hackamore is a type of bitless headgear that controls a horse using pressure on its face instead of its mouth, and that pressure is applied by a noseband. Since there are many configurations of hackamores, the pressure can also come from the cheekpieces and curbstrap.
There can be a few reasons to use a hackamore instead of a bit.
If you are riding in the brush, you can easily hack off branches and such with a bit.
If a horse has a fleshy mouth (often a draft or draft cross), it is difficult to keep a bit in their mouth; this means that for the rider doing a lot of trail riding, endurance riders whose horse will be traveling a long way and want the horse as comfortable as possible. A horse that has problems in the mouth and is more comfortable riding with a hackamore because of that.
Or a horse that is fully ‘green’ and has not had a bit in their mouth yet.
- Western Bridle
Most Western bridles are what people associate Western riders with. Whatever your preference, plain, simple, silver conchos, or bling in the middle. They have great bridles to suit the aesthetics and blending of your horse’s comfort factor.
Western bridles will make your style perform even the newest Western rider.
