Desolate Debenhams staff fear imminent closure

Staff at the Southport Debenhams store say they’re fearing for their jobs every day.

Debenhams store on Lord Street will continue to trade despite the company falling into the hands of its lenders but staff speaking anonymously say they aren’t confident of staying open beyond the summer.

The administrators said the lenders would now look to sell the business as soon as possible.

The chain has been struggling in recent months and issued three profit warnings last year. It also has a debt pile of £640m.

Lord Street store is one that lenders are looking at due to low footfall and the decline of Lord Street as a tourist attraction.
