Cyclist killed in Formby Bypass crash

An elderly man has been killed following a collision on the Formby Bypass.

OTS News understands from a number of sources that the man, understood to be an elderly cyclist, was killed after colliding with a car near to North End Lane.

Formby Bypass remains closed between Ince Blundell and Altcar Road and there is no confirmed time when the road will be reopened.

Police have asked motorists to stay well away from the area and seek alternate travel between Formby and Brooms Cross.

Most drivers will be diverted through Halsall and the Northway bypass.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said “We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the Formby bypass this morning, Tuesday 15th March.

Officers were called to the junction of the Formby bypass/North End Lane at 11.05am following reports of a collision involving a cyclist and a BMW car.

The cyclist, a man in his 70s, was injured during the collision and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting with enquiries.

Serious collision investigator Sergeant Steve Smith said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman who sadly passed away following the collision.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing and we are appealing to anyone who was travelling along the Formby bypass, close to the junction of North End Lane, who saw the collision at just after 11am or captured anything significant on their dash cam to contact us.

“The Formby bypass will remain closed for a period of time as our investigation continues and we would urge motorists to find an alternative route.

“We would like to thank people for their patience while this incident is dealt with.”
