Cyclist injured on Hoghton St after hitting base of stolen bollard

An elderly cyclist has been injured after hitting the base of a bollard that had been stolen by vandals.

68-year-old David (full name witheld) contacted OTS News on Thursday evening with information about injuries sustained to his hands and legs after the accident on Hoghton Street.

The gentlemen sent images of his injuries, and says that his clothing was ruined in the incident.

OTS News is aware of previous reports of bollards being stolen on Hoghton St, having received the file photo below in February.

Sefton Council say that the bollard has been stolen and will be replaced.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “We are aware that a small number of traffic bollards have been vandalised or stolen on Hoghton Street, Southport.

“Any mindless and destructive act like this is not a victimless crime and these bollards are in place in order to keep road users of all types safe, while clearly defining the mixed use carriageway.

“We are working to renew and replace these traffic bollards as soon as resources allow and would encourage anyone who witnesses this type of vandalism to report it to the police immediately.”
