Scams

A resident had her computer hacked and the email details of her contacts were obtained by the scammer. Using the resident’s correct email address a message was sent supposedly from her to a number of recipients. One recipient replied thinking the message came from her friend, and was asked by the scammer to buy a gift card for her niece, for a well- known on line purchasing company. The explanation given for the request was that she was travelling and had tried to purchase a card online but without success.

The recipient was concerned and attempted to email her friend to check it was a genuine request but the message went to the scammer who replied:

“Thank you for your concern and willing to help. I’m willing to spend a £100 on the gift card and it should be £100 unit. You can have it delivered to her email address.”

The recipient was then given the email address of the ‘niece’ plus a happy birthday message to be included.

Luckily the recipient phoned her friend before purchasing the card, to find her at home and completely unaware her computer had been hacked by the scammer.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to everyone.
