A COUNCILLOR who led businesses’ and residents’ successful battle against parking controls has revealed that road resurfacing work and new safety features are to improve the area.
Cllr David Barton co-ordinated the campaign which resulted in Sefton Council pulling plans to carry out controversial parking controls on Manchester Road, Southport.
The council was considering introducing a two-hour parking limit, and putting double yellow lines on a section of the road.
Now Cllr Barton, who represents Dukes Ward, has revealed that following consultation the section of Manchester Road from Hawkshead Street, through to and including the junction with Leyland Road is to be resurfaced.
Other safety measures due to be introduced include the double yellow lines on Alexandra Road, which are currently incorrectly marked, are to be extended northbound on the western side of the road.
Highways bosses are also to review the blue left turn sign at the junction with Alexandra Road as it has confused motorists leaving Manchester Road.
Manchester Road Resurfacing Plan
Cllr Barton said: “I would like to welcome the extended resurfacing of the road and the junction with added safety features that have been taken forward from the consultation.
“I am delighted that having worked with a vast number of local residents within the Manchester Road community we have been able to achieve the additional resurfacing of the road which was not originally included in the plans. Despite the minor short-term inconveniences I hope this will serve to strengthen the community in the long- term through further increased investor confidence in this shopping precinct and the surrounding residential area which now has 14 strong businesses supporting our local economy.”
Cllr Barton revealed that during the resurfacing work, which will take around three weeks, residents will still be allowed access to their properties and that local bus services will continue.
He said: “I would strongly recommend anyone with any further concerns to either directly contact myself, or the council’s Contractor Liaison officer for any more assistance.
“At this time I would also like to remind everyone that Manchester Road is still open for business as usual and would recommend everyone to visit this enchanting local area which is a key part of our Classic resort town.”
