Councillor leads campaign to re-open Southport Flower Show park to residents
A campaigning councillor is leading residents’ fight to reclaim their local park after it was beset by problems surrounding Southport Flower Show and taken over by caravaners.
Cllr David Barton said he had been contacted by a dozen local residents who are concerned about Victoria Park on Rotten Row and the Esplanade.
The park has traditionally been well-frequented by local residents of all ages from the Birkdale area during the summer but has become invaded by caravans over the last year.
Cllr barton, who represents Dukes Ward on Sefton Council, also met with local residents recently to discuss various matters stemming from the locked gate also at Victoria Park leading onto the Esplanade adjacent to Rotten Row which has caused difficulties for passing visitors such as young families, cyclists, elderly couples, etc.
He revealed that the terms of the council lease with the Southport Flower Show, due to be held fromAugust 17 to 20, are now being investigated at his request to discover if the gate closure is permitted.
Cllr Barton said: “The park had been closed for up to 40 days prior to my original residents’ meeting back in April. It is essential that those living in the surrounding area are permitted to enjoy the park without this recurring inconvenience.
“I would encourage all stakeholders to work positively and constructively together to allow as best utilisation of the park whilst considering all parties that frequent it.”
Cllr Barton has asked the council to look in to whether it can generate income from the caravans being there.
He said: “This would enable funding to be redistributed back into the local Southport community through general highways improvements and community projects such as the maintenance and upkeep of the streetscape for the benefit of both local residents, businesses and visitors.
“It is paramount that this precious community green space is able to be utilised by as many people as possible given the natural health benefits alone from being outdoors, which is also a great way to socialise and get to know neighbours, especially during the summer.
“I am seeking a positive resolution that will benefit everyone and welcome the efforts of the Southport Flower Show team. The event continues to boost Southport’s local economy every year.”
