Sefton Council will be flying the Remembering Srebrenica flag to mark the 26th anniversary of the massacre.
Sunday, July 11 will be Srebrenica Memorial Day, a time when people across the UK and Europe remember the dark days in July 1995 when thousands of Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered based on their identity.
As with previous years, Sefton Council will be flying the Remembering Srebrenica flag from Thursday July 8 to Monday July 12 to show the borough’s support to those affected.
Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “As an organisation we believe we must all remain vigilant against these forces, and take positive action to build stronger, more resilient communities.
“This was the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.
“Remembering Srebrenica is about learning and remembering what has happened in the past, and making a commitment to work against it ever happening again. The lesson from Srebrenica is that no society is invulnerable to prejudice and intolerance.”
The theme for the 26th anniversary is ‘Rebuilding Lives’, which aims to honour the over 2 million people displaced due to genocide and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia.
