Council Conservative leader fails in West Lancs MP bid

5th July 2024

Mike Prendergast, Conservative leader on Sefton Council, has been unsuccessful in his bid to become the MP of West Lancs.

Labour’s Ashley Dalton successfully defended her seat.

Labour has held the constituency since 1992. Ashley Dalton became the MP last year when Rosie Cooper’s resignation triggered a by-election.

The Dukes ward councillor also stood in that by-election, earning 25.2% of the vote, enough for second place. His vote share fell last night as Ashley Dalton increased her majority.

Mike Prendergast said: “I would like to congratulate Ashley Dalton on her election victory and wish her well in representing the people of West Lancashire in Westminster.

“Thank you to all those people across the constituency who voted and thank you to those who voted for me and supported my campaign.

“It has been a huge honour to stand again in West Lancashire and I am forever indebted to those who gave up their time to volunteer and help with the campaign.”
