Residents in Southport will have to wait at least another year to have their say on who represents them in local politics.
Seftom Council has today reconfirmed that there will be no local government elections in 2025.
This means the next election, where locals can vote on who they want to represent them in local politics, will be in May 2026.
The gap is known as a fallow year and is commonplace, occurring on average every four years to coincide with the amount of time a councillor ‘sits’ on the council and represents residents.
However the reaction to this confirmation has been overwhelmingly negative with residents suggesting there are conspiratorial reasons as to why they cannot vote this year.
A council spokesperson moved to quell these rumours, stating “There are no scheduled elections to take place in May this year. This is because 2025 is a fallow year in the election cycle for Metropolitan Councils.
“Local elections will take place in 2026, 2027 and 2028.”
